Damascus 03/13/09

In what we are still stubbornly calling GCOM-Damascus, this time we met at Chateau de la Jones, in Germantown. There were 13 of us meeting on Friday the 13th. Oddly, we didn't play any spooky games. In attendance were:

  • Bob & Carol Jones
  • Dave & Noreen Fair
  • Scott & Liz Percival
  • Eric & Laura Reinhold
  • David & Martha Briggs
  • Doug Hoylman
  • Eric Haas
  • Aubrey Bell
We got together and played a few games. Duh. What we played:
  • Ticket to Ride, with the 1910 expansion. Eric R won handily with 158, followed by Noreen (122), Liz (121), Laura (102), and Doug (also 102).
  • Metro, a game about making circuitous Parisian subway lines, where Eric H won 84 to Martha B's 71, and David B's 56
  • There were 2 games of Dominion. Noreen won the first 40-36-33-29 and Liz the second 39-31-16-11. Eric R & Doug were the other two players.
  • Zooloretto, where Eric H scored 21 to Laura's 20 to squeak out the win, followed by Martha at 16, Carol at 15, and David B at 11.
  • David & Goliath, a trick-taking game with a twist that the lowest card played wins the highest one played, but the highest one played wins all the rest. Doug won easily with 187 to Eric H's 140, Eric R's 131, and Liz's 121.
  • Five, count 'em, FIVE games of Bananagrams. Liz won 2, Noreen won 2, and Eric H. won one. Other players were Eric R & Doug.
  • The final game to end, was the first to start. The 3-4 hour time guesstimate being horribly off, it was 18VA. Part of the 18xx family of economic train games, these are long, rich games. Final scores were: Aubrey 4946, Scott 4827, Dave 4580, Bob 4370
Thanks for coming out, thanks to Bob & Carol for hosting. We all had a great time.

Damascus 02/28/09

[posted by Bob]

This session was hosted by David and Nadine Kuijt who were very nice to invite us all into their home, which was very comfortable and exceptionally suited for gaming. Thanks!

  • Leslie Barkley
  • David and Martha Briggs
  • Noreen and Corwin Fair
  • Scott Fox
  • Bob, Ben and Carol Jones
  • David and Nadine Kuijt
  • Linda and Rick Pasquale
  • Scott and Liz Percival
With ten people ready to go, four of us decided straight away to satisfy their Tichu fix. In a very close game (which also means a very long game), Linda and Noreen bested Liz and Leslie (what’s with all the “L” names?) 1130 to 970. Not only was it a close game, but Linda and Noreen must have had a whopping good final hand.

The other six of us gathered around the big table to play one of my favorites, RailRoad Tycoon. I started out strong taking an excellent position in the Southeast and shot into the lead. Unfortunately for me, near the end I didn’t have enough long routes to stay competitive. Conversely, Rick started out very slowly, grabbing two hotels over his first two turns but came out strong in the mid-game, took the lead and never flagged, seriously pummeling the rest of us who were all very close. Final scores were Rick 67, Nadine 50, Carol 50, Scott P 49, Bob 47 and David K 44. Great game.

Ben and Corwin played a game of Tiki Topple, but the records don’t indicate who won.

Meanwhile, Scott F and the Briggs arrived so they settled down to 3-player Agricola. In a fairly low-scoring game, Scott crunched the Briggs, 27 to David B’s 21 to Martha’s 20.

After some departures, with 8 people remaining we decided to play a big ole game of Wings of War. David has many of the plane miniatures including some he made himself. We played with the rule that the first three people to die could come back into the game. This benefited the Allies as they died quick deaths; all three resurrectees were from Allied Planes. We also played that hits had to be scored on the center peg instead of anywhere on the base, which lengthened the game considerably. Alas, even with the extra lives, the Allies did poorly. Nadine, Linda and Carol all died twice while Bob died once. The Germans fared much better, with only Noreen and Rick dying, while Leslie and David K survived and won the game for the Germans.

It was a very enjoyable night for all. Thanks, David and Nadine.

Damascus 10/31/08

Because of the holiday, we rescheduled this session for 9PM and held it at the Jones house in Germantown.

Attendance:

  • Dave &Martha Briggs
  • Ben Jones
  • Bob & Carol Jones
  • Linda & Rick Pasquale
  • Liz & Scott Percival
We started late but still got in a good number of games. First up was the fun trivia and betting game, Wits & Wagers. I had the lead going into the last round but a good answer and a big bet shot Carol into the victory. Final scores were Carol 120, Bob 110, Liz 105, Rick 65, Scott 60 and Linda 45.

Next we broke into two groups. I played Scott and Liz at Race for the Galaxy. Starting with New Sparta and a good mix of military cards, I took the military strategy. Liz went big into production and had a ton by game end. Scott was the first to twelve cards played but unfortunately for him, I had played the the military 6 card and a rebel homeworld on the last turn for 16 points. Final scores were Bob 33, Scott 30 and Liz 27.

After Race, Ben joined us for a four player battle with disease in Pandemic. We started off very well, curing the blue and black diseases in short order. Unfortunately, a bad run of red cards was making life difficult in Asia. Ben the Scientist had the four red cards needed to cure red, but before his turn, a string of red outbreaks brought all the red cubes onto the board and ended things badly for the human race.

Meanwhile, the others were playing Agricola. By the final turn, only two players (Carol and Rick) had all five family members in play. Carol was the only one to go to a stone house. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough. Final scores were Rick 33, Martha 29, Carol 28, Linda 26 and Dave 19.

We had invited everyone to wear costumes and the Briggs and the Pasquales took us up on it. Unfortunately, we didn't get a picture of Martha. Rick's costume is awesomely appropriate.

Damascus 09/05/08

Since Dave and Noreen were off conventioning at some boardgaming thing, we held the Friday night Damascus GCOM session at the Jones house in Germantown.

Attending:

  • Leslie Barkley
  • Aubrey Bell
  • David and Martha Briggs
  • Jason Cheng
  • Luke Conte
  • Doug Hoylman
  • Bob and Carol Jones
  • Rick and Linda Pasquale
  • Eric and Laura Reinhold
Eager to get down to gaming, we broke into three groups.

Since Race for the Galaxy wasn’t available (sorry, haven’t bought it yet), Eric, Laura, Rick and Doug brought out its cousin, the excellent San Juan. One of the cool things about San Juan is that it’s very portable yet packs a good gaming punch. Since you can put all the bits into a deck box, Carol and I usually take San Juan when we’re traveling. Final scores were Rick 27, Doug 23 (tiebreaker), Eric 23, Laura 18.

Meanwhile, another group brought out the mid-nineties Euro, Manhattan, a building game with direct conflict between the players. Manhattan is a solid design but can be unbalanced if all four players aren’t watching their neighbors. In this instance, it looks like Jason and Leslie got the best of any conflicts. Final scores were Jason 38, Leslie 37, Linda 26, and Carol 26.

Martha and David had said they wanted to learn one of my favorites, Princes of Florence, so out it came. We were joined by Aubrey and Luke. This was a very close game and everyone did well. Aubrey only produced four Works but still had an excellent score. After the seventh round, there was a three way tie between me, Luke and Martha. Unfortunately for him, Luke hadn’t been able to complete his Prestige card when he ran short of cash during the final auction round. I had a Prestige card, “Complete the Most Works”, and Luke and I tied for the most with six Works each. That was worth 4 points, giving me the victory. Final scores were Bob 63, Luke 59, Martha 59, Aubrey 50. And David 46.

At the pub table, four players traveled the London Metro in On the Underground. The game took a bit longer than usual. Rick proved the best urban planner. Rick 44, Carol 40, Jason 37, and first-time player, Leslie 34.

Another group broke out Knizia’s fabulous auction game, Traumfabrik, set in the Golden Age of Hollywood. Amazingly, first time player Linda obtained six scripts during the game which paid off for the win. Final scores were Linda 101, Doug 87, Laura 52, and Eric 43. 101 is a huge score even for an experienced player. Nice job, Linda!

Luke expressed in interest in one of Carol’s favorite games, Attika, and Carol was happy to play, joined by Doug and Aubrey. Carol made a run for a two temple win early but was thwarted. As the temples were blocked, someone would have to place their last tile on the board to win. Doug did for the victory.

Meanwhile with seven players, Jason suggested another old favorite, Formula De. We chose the Japanese racetrack. The lead went back and forth during the game with Leslie having atrociously bad luck and falling behind. At the halfway point, Jason had a commanding lead. Coming into the final turn, however, he was passed by David, Martha and me. Eric took a big risk, trying to catch the leaders but overshot the turn and crashed into the wall. Of the three leaders, whoever was ahead after the next roll would easily cross the finish line the following turn. Martha rolled a seven, David rolled a seven, and I rolled a twelve for the win. The order of finish was 1st - Bob, 2nd - David, 3rd - Martha, 4th - Jason, 5th - Leslie, 6th - Laura, 7th - Eric.

At this point, most everyone departed, but four of us were still up for one more game, Agricola. My luck was consistent this evening and I pulled off a final victory for the night. Bob 42, Jason 38, Carol 28 and Leslie 25.

Thanks to everyone for coming out. We’ll see you at Damascus this Friday night!
